Whilst consumerism is still rife, there is a trend now to make things last in the home. There is something wonderful about having an item around that has been there for years, even passed down from members of the family. Not only do ‘buy once’ items save you money but think about what you are doing for the planet by reusing and recycling.
It might take a while to get into the mind-set of not throwing things away and instead of retaining them and even fix them if they break, but it is so worth it. Here are just a few ‘buy once’ items that you might want to start collecting in your home.
Food mixer
If you don’t have the one that mum passed down to you, buy the best you can afford and keep it going. Make sure that it is solidly made, preferably a good brand and one that can even be mended if it breaks down. Choose one with all of the functions that you need and give it pride of place in your kitchen. Kenwood offers a great range
Cookware
Here Le Creuset comes to mind. A top French cookware range, who cannot love its enamelled cast-iron cookware. Pretty enough to serve oven to table, the range should include all that you should ever need, from saucepans to casserole dishes. Choose your favourite colour and start collecting
Dinner set
Whether your preference is for china, porcelain or ceramic, having a dinner set that you can use day after day, as well as for dinner parties, is a must-have. Decide on how many place settings you want and then check out some of the popular brands such as Denby and Royal Doulton. Plain white is always a good buy as it will look good in any setting. Alternatively, if you like to add spots of colour, you will find some wonderful designs available from Vancasso. Some of the new dinnerware hitting the market is made from bamboo and looks amazing.
Saucepan set
When it comes to saucepan sets, you have so many options to choose from. As this is going to be a ‘buy once’ item in your home, do your research before you commit. Materials vary from stainless steel, ceramic and even copper. With brands-a-plenty to choose from, decide on what pans you need to be included in the set. Many manufacturers will also offer items separately to form your own bespoke range. Buy as close to the top of the range as you can to ensure that you have a pan set that will last.
Sofa
This may seem like an odd one to add to the list, as some people change their sofa when they re-decorate. But how about switching the way you think of a sofa? Go high-end made-to-measure and create your own unique sofa to last. If it comes with washable covers, even better. Make comfort a priority. We love the ones on offer from Made.com and the stunning hand-made options from Makerandson.com.
Buy well, buy to last and you will soon have a home full of ‘buy once’ items. The more you use them, the more you will grow to love them. Not only are you saving money but by not throwing things out and replacing them, you are changing the way that you shop. Become a ‘buy once’ shopper and join the quest to save the planet.
