Making your home more cosy for winter

Whatever the weather is doing outside, we always want our homes to be cosy, warm and inviting. If your interior could do with a bit of a boost in terms of snugness then we have a few ideas to help that will be right up your street!
Not expensive or difficult, it is more about adding to what you have rather than replacing it. Think lighting, textures and colours; take note of all three and soon you will have a place that you love to come home to.
Here is our take on how to improve home cosiness:
Candles – nothing makes such a dramatic difference to an interior than candles. Their soft and warm flickering light and natural perfume immediately turns a plain room into somewhere to relax and chill out. Always go for candles made from pure essences and untreated waxes. The ones in the range from Juliette at Home have the added advantage of leaving you with a delightful vintage decorative pot once your candle has been used up which is great for flowers or preserves. They are
also wonderfully scented with a host of Kitchen Larder favourites to choose from:
Lighting – as well as adding candles, pay attention to the general room lighting. Used carefully, lighting can be the difference between a cosy home and a functional one. Overhead lighting with white bulbs can be very harsh and clinical. Opt for wall lights if you can or even standard lamps or lanterns. Use warm coloured bulbs or even pastel coloured ones. You can even buy bulbs that look like candlelight; great to use in candelabras. If you have dimmers, use them to lower the lighting when cosying down to watch TV or simply relax.
Layer up that bed – ensure that your bedroom is a really restful place with plenty of cosy bedding, cushions and throws. Soft cotton bedding feels wonderful next to the skin. Accentuating the colour of the linen with contrasting or matching throws and eiderdowns and cushions can make a wealth of difference to your bedding-down area. Instead of having one big high-tog duvet, opt for several lightweight layers; this is also great as you can throw off a few if you get too hot.
Accessorise sofas and chairs – placing a prettily and brightly patterned throw over a favourite sofa or an old rocking chair immediately conjures up images of traditional cottages. Check out the colour already in your room, on the walls, floors and curtains and then either complement or contrast. If you love the eclectic bohemian look then go for deep pinks, oranges and warm blues and greens. Let
your creative streak come to the fore and go to town with lots of comfortable and warm textiles and linens.
If the colour scheme of your home interior is neutral, it is so easy to cosy it up by adding colour and warmth in the form of candles, lighting, layers and accessories.
Take a stroll around your favourite junk shops and car boot sales and let your imagination roam free. Before you know it, you will be so cosy at home you will never want to leave!
